Milford House

Drefach Felindre

The brief was to swap two rooms in a charming and colourful end-of-terrace home, transforming the existing living space into a kitchen and the old kitchen into a living area. This reconfiguration made better use of the space, natural light, and flow throughout the ground floor.

The tired kitchen was removed from the sun-drenched, south-facing front room to make way for a bright, cosy space where an artist and writer could reflect and create while enjoying the views. The new kitchen was repositioned to the rear room, which is set into the hill behind the house and is naturally darker. This shift made the most of its cool, enclosed atmosphere -  the perfect environment for cooking and hosting, with views of the fern-covered hillside rising just beyond the windows.

The design goal was to create two practical, affordable yet enjoyable spaces that felt cohesive with the character of the rest of the home, while maximising the home's relationship to its setting—its orientation, light, and the surrounding natural landscape.
