The Bezza

Rhoscolyn

We were commissioned to restore and modestly extend a dilapidated shed that no longer fulfilled its original purpose: protecting a 100-year-old wooden caravan from the elements in the exposed coastal location of Rhoscolyn, Anglesey.

The caravan holds deep sentimental value — it arrived here in 1925, brought by our client’s grandfather. So beloved was the land that the caravan never left, becoming a fixture of family life for generations who have spent their summers here. It carries nearly a century’s worth of memories and nostalgia, treasured by a wide extended family.

This was a particularly rewarding project, not only because we were working entirely with, and often at the mercy of, the existing structure, but also because it required sensitivity to the needs of a client living abroad, all while operating within a modest budget. It became an exercise in balancing the old with the new, and in bridging the past with the present.

We were honoured to be entrusted with this task and had the unique experience of living on-site throughout the build. This allowed us to immerse ourselves in the space; designing, building, and maintaining it with an intimate understanding of its character and context.

The design was intended to sit seamlessly within the surrounding landscape. We chose cladding that has since weathered to a soft silver, echoing the tones of the white houses scattered throughout the area. The windows and door were painted a light blue, reflecting the nearby sea and the wide, often dramatic skies overhead.

The completed shed now offers more usable space around the caravan a place to store camping gear, books, maps, photos, keepsakes, and adventure equipment like paddleboards. It also serves as a secondary, cosy retreat, the perfect spot to land with a cup of tea after a long day at the beach or a windswept coastal walk.
