Tŷ Bach

Hermon

Tŷ Bach is a small, thoughtfully designed cabin created to complement the woodland setting it occupies. Serving as a necessary support space for a nearby live-in yurt, it houses a shower room and compost toilet.

Though modest in footprint, the cabin embraces vertical space, creating a sense of openness and spacial generosity. The interior and exterior is clad in locally sourced Douglas fir, sporting a warm pink hue. Reclaimed materials were central to the design philosophy—wooden windows, a door, and even a discarded shower tray were salvaged and given new life, demonstrating the value and potential found in what others might consider waste. These elements not only flood the interior with natural light but also frame beautiful views of the surrounding woodland, offering the experience of showering amidst nature while enjoying indoor comfort.

The design also prioritises passive ventilation, with windows on the west and north elevations creating effective cross-ventilation—particularly useful post-shower. The roof, clad in corrugated steel sheeting, extends well beyond the cabin’s walls, offering strong protection from the elements. The walls are insulated with 100% sheep’s wool from Sheep’s Wool Insulation ltd, enhancing thermal efficiency and sustainability.

Although designed to serve as a shower and toilet facility in this instance, Ty Bach is highly adaptable. With slight modifications, it could function as a secluded office, a sauna, or even a versatile garden room—the possibilities are endless.
